Access to care has not changed in over 4000 years, and will not change now or in the future. The pharoahs had their mouths restored with gold, their chamber maids were mostly toothless. As we say, the rest of us fall somewhere in between. Don't think that any privite insurance company is going to give you a pharoah's smile.

As a matter of fact, I was out of the country when the NY Times article hit. I was in Sweden speaking to the Swedish Academy of Cosmetic Dentisty. Since we subscribe to the NYT online, we didn't miss the piece. It is interesting that my first comment was .... so what is new? It seems to me that most dentists are aiming to the high end of the profession. Ask how many dentists really love to do basic, bread and butter dentistry for low to moderate income people and you will see very few hands go up. Dentists are making a hefty living - especially in relation to their poor cousins the MD's. Even those who have high overheads still make a living most Americans would choke on. The Swedes were very interested in the article and I learned that while they make what one would consider in EU standards to be a good living they do not consider themselves rich or the wealthy. I take no issue with dentists who have targeted the high end of the profession and our population; yet, as we know, still 50% of Americans do not seek regular care. It is a different business providing services to these folks and a business most dentists do not want to be in. I felt the article was generally accurate and a fairly true reflection of the great numbers of underserved Americans. It is still a shameful state of affairs that 45 million Americans do not have health insurance and either cannot get it or cannot afford it. This is a great topic for a discussion and these are my initial two cents.
